“Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.” The most glorious privilege you and I have is that we have a book here that the Holy Spirit alone can interpret to us and make real in our lives. And you and I can never know the will of God ignorant of the Word of God. And again, that’s the reason that a great many believers today are cruising in a fog, totally ignorant of the Word of God. He’s the author of the book. And He alone can interpret it to our hearts and lives.

Galatians Bible Companion

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

“I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye. Be not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee.” Now what kind of a believer are you today? Do you have a bit and bridle in your mouth? And a lot of Christians are like that today. And that’s what they want—somebody to pull on the bit here, pull on it there, to tell them where to turn. God says, “I guide you with mine eye. I want you to stay close to Me and My Word so you can see, so I can lead you, so I can prompt you and guide you.” It’s not a voice or a vision from heaven.

Our Shepherd

My friend today, the only place in the world you and I will ever be contented and satisfied and happy is when we reach the place where we are abandoned to the will of God. And until you get there, oh, you’re going to be a Christian that’s unhappy and miserable. Oh, today to be a dedicated child of God. But my friend, this wonderful Savior died for you on the cross, and He asks you to come all the way to Him. All the way to Him. He says, “My sheep hear my voice … they follow Me, I give unto them eternal life, they shall never perish.” Oh, to have Him today as a Shepherd. Is He your Shepherd?

The whole Word

Now the Holy Spirit will never lead contrary to the Word, but He’ll always lead in accordance to the Word of God. And a great many people try to use the Word of God like it’s a sort of a Ouija board. They get into a particular circ*mstance, and they go to the Bible, and they begin to thumb through it. And they find a nice comforting verse, and they say, “Well, this is what God gave me.” God is not giving out verses like shuffling cards. He gives the Word. The whole Word. The Word of God. And you don’t go to the Word of God and pick out one little verse. The Bible’s not a spare tire. It’s not a first aid kit. It’s a chart and compass. In fact, here is God’s radar screen.

The will of God in our lives

How can I know and do the will of God? First of all, there must be a desire for the will of God in your life. I want the will of God above everything else in my life. Second thing is, God has power to place you in His path. If you really want God’s will, submit to Him. He not only knows what’s best for you, God has the power to put you in His will. The third thing, God loves you, and He wants you in His will. And His will for you is the best thing in your life. We need to have a desire, an overweening passion, for the will of God. And until we have it, we haven’t even got to first base with Him.

The solution to our problems

Do you know what it is tonight to trust Him? Do you know what it is tonight to rest in Him? You can be religious and still not trust Him. Are you trusting? Shall we pray. Our gracious Father God, we can’t have peace apart from Thee. And yet there’s a Savior tonight that is calling us, saying to men, “Come unto Me.” There are those that are torn by turmoil and trouble. We pray Thou wilt speak peace to their hearts tonight by them just simply trusting Jesus, believing in Jesus, that He is the solution to our problems. For we pray in Jesus’ name, amen.

Saved sinners

God sent His Son because He loves you, and because He’s holy He had to pay the penalty for your sins and mine. And He died on the cross. He is the mercy seat for our sins, but not for ours only but for the sins of the whole world as a mercy seat. And you can come to Him. But now, if you reject it, then the judgment of God must come upon you—because Christ bore your judgment. That’s the only way God forgives you. It’s not because you’re a sweet little boy or you’re a nice little girl. You’re a lost sinner; you’re in rebellion against Him. I don’t know why we feel like we’re superior people today. The best that we can say is we’re saved sinners.

Avoid foolishness

“Avoid foolish questions, genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.” Now, Paul said we’re to defend the faith but not in argument or debate. That’s no good. That never led anyone to the Lord. You might whip a man down intellectually, but you’ve not touched his heart and won him for Christ. Stay away from these foolish questions. Right through this period there’s been a great deal said about demonism, and I’ve had any number of letters, “Oh Dr. McGee give a series on demonism. Write a book on it.” No, I’d much rather tell you about the Holy Spirit that can indwell you and, if He does, no demon could ever possess you, my friend.

Get out the Word

If you are listening to this program and you have not accepted Christ, God's not even interested in your good works, because what you call good works, God calls dirty laundry. “The righteousness of man is filthy rags in his sight.” He wants to save you, and if you come just like you are to Him, He's done something for you and He's not asking you to do something. What can you do for God? Now that you've been saved and you're His child, He wants you to get involved—I think to get the Word of God out today. That's the reason I keep mentioning that, friends. I feel like that you ought to be involved in getting the Word of God out and you might be cheerful to perform good works.

God’s surplus

“Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior.” Have you ever noticed that God always has a surplus of everything? Anything God does, there's surplus. When somebody says to me, "You know, we prayed for so much money and the exact amount came in and we know God did it," believe me, I think if God was in it, He would have given you a few more dollars. He generally does. That's the way He moves. “Abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior.” When you read through the Bible, notice how many times God has a surplus—abundantly, you know. He's able to do “exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think.” He doesn't just give you the exact amount, friends. He always has a surplus.

The deity of Christ

Paul taught the deity of Christ, and I believe it means here “of the great God, and He's also our Savior.” Who is He? He's Jesus Christ, my friend. What did He do? He gave Himself for us that He might redeem us. He paid a price for us that He might redeem us not just out of sin, that's true, but redeem us "from all iniquity … and purify unto Himself a people of His own, zealous of good works." Sure God wants you to live for Him, and sure God wants good works, but He'll have to redeem you first, friends.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
